"Let's grab a coffee late this week!"
"Are you free for coffee? We can talk then."
"I'm dying to see you! Let's get coffee, ok?!"
I say these words, you say these words, unless you are one of those weirdoes who doesn't drink coffee... in which case this post isn't for you (I still love you, I just don't know that our relationship can ever be the same). Coffee is more than a beverage, it is a cornerstone. It brings people together, shapes entire communities, and the modern 'cafe' has created an entire movement in culture (coffee shop culture as the kids are calling it).
It's funny to me how much I cling to this new sense of decorum. Coffee is no longer just something to wake you up, it is something which brings you connection; to people, to a moment, it is an experience. Yes, I realize that sounds extreme but you guys, I look forward to my first cup of coffee each day with the same excitement as a kid looking forward to Christmas morning. When I wake up I think first of how cozy I am, second of how I can not wait to sip the steaming (nearly scalding) surface of my coffee and feel its life giving warmth run down my throat which will wake and warm me all at once! It is a truly beautiful thing.
Getting coffee with a friend or colleague brings you together in a way that meeting for drinks never could (mostly because you can actually hear each other and coffee shops are usually bright and comforting, not dark and full of drunks). You can talk, sip, pass the time. It gives you space, freedom, creative energy, and a caffeine buzz, what's not to love?
*Side note* Guys- when asking a girl to coffee be clear if it is a "friend thing" or a "hey I'm interested in getting to know you as more than a friend" thing... because I, unknowingly, mislead many a man while in high school and collage when we went for coffee 'just as friends' (in my mind) and then was so confused when they asked me on a real date... ok ok, to be fair I was super naive, but still, be clear with your intentions- please and thank you.
Would you like to get a coffee? Pass the time and chat? Let's find a quiet corner in our favorite cafe, order two steaming cups of that heavenly liquid and settle in.
