The other day I got a notification that someone had liked one of my posts on facebook (it is important to note that I only use the fb for blog updates and playing a lightning round of "what are the people I love up to now" via a brief scroll through my feed). When I saw the aforementioned notification it made me smile, bashfully, humbled that this person I deem to be so 'legend' would like my post... this person who is so... cool and in the know. It made me start to think about who and what I (we) are actually impressed by. Immediately we all think being impressive is- fame, power, status, or money (usually a combination of these things) but you guys, if Richie Rich taught us anything, it is that money can't buy you friends... ok that is beside the point, I just really wanted to refer to the overly gelled, milkshake slurping, twelve year old Macaulay Culkin, because why not?
Merriam Webster (a couple of wizened old dudes) define being 'Impressive' as: evoking admiration through size, quality, or skill: grand, imposing, or awesome. Nowhere in that definition does it say 'money', 'celebrity' or 'status'... Lately I have been really inspired by the people I know who are ACTUALLY doing shit! Friends and acquaintances who are creating and doing, individuals who are taking charge of their own lives. No matter how 'normal' these lives/jobs/experiences may seem on the surface, the fact that they are unapologetic for who and what they are is amazing!
This is not about the money you have in the bank, the number of followers you have or your google standing... not that those things are bad... not that they can't be a part of the equation... but they most certainly don't have to be. There is a quote which say something like, "your actions on earth echo in eternity" but what that quote leaves out is that the ripples you make can change the future (for generations to come) on this planet.
So today I raise my glass to those of you who are passionate, to my friends, to creatives, to those who live with intention... You are impressive! Thank you for living a genuine life which inspires those around you. The world is all the better for having you in it.
