Rumor has it you aren't who you say you are.
Rumor has it you did that one thing, that one time, with that one guy.
Rumor has it you color your hair, whiten your teeth, and get lip injections.
I don't know if it's true, but the rumors would led me to believe...
Rumors. They are funny little things. So often we don't know where they come from or how they got started. We use rumors to make sense of the world, spreading them thick as grandmas frosting over all of life's uncertainties to hide the imperfections and fill in the gaps. We share them as fact and sell them as truth, especially when they are juicy and make us (the holder of the prized information) look good (never mind what happens to the individual on the other end of things).
It's funny because I wrote that intro about a month ago. I started looking up stats and the science of rumors, got distracted and forgot about this post entirely... however, the world is a strange place and the universe works in mysterious ways and here we are, some time later and this post could not apply more to my life.
I was recently the center of trans-state rumor. How the thing got started is a simple game of telephone- one person says something (me) to another, who says it (slightly incorrectly) to someone else, who misconstrues the information entirely and then I get an email saying that I said something I never said which hurt a dear friend of mine. Thankfully everything worked out without too much damage, but the whole situation gave me pause, it stopped my heart and tied my stomach into knots. The fact that someone said what they did, made me feel as if I HAD actually said the hurtful things they implied; it damaged not only my reputation but the reputation of my friend.
The fact is, we aren't in Jr.High, we are 'grown ups' and our words carry far more weight and can do much more damage. Somehow the game of telephone still haunts our realities and the rumor mill runs full steam ahead without much thought.
I started this post with the intention to talk about rumors we spread as kids like the one about bugs in Ketchup or earth worms in hot dogs... even the one about BubbleYum being made from spiders eggs... The difference is we had enough common sense to ask someone whether or not these things were true (most of the time) and then we had to choose- trust the truth or cling to the rumor.
There is freedom in the truth, it takes away the shame, the guilt, and the fear. Rumor has it I owe you all an apology... and that rumor is true. To anyone whom I have harmed, to anyone who I have spoken of out of context I am genuinely sorry. I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me.
Thank you for being genuine souls. With humility and gratitude.
*rumor has it, this is where the hipsters hang out.
